Steven Seagal & Thunderbox

14th March 2007 at the Lowry Theatre, Salford. Not quite knowing what to expect as I walked into the Lyric Theatre at Salfords Lowry Theatre I was met by a huge array of people from all walks of life, from the obvious Seagal movie fans, to the middle aged couple who looked like they’d come to see a classical performance and walked through the wrong doors.

I am, by my own admission, something of a fan of Steven Seagals films, but until recently had no knowledge of his musical sideline. From what I read on his site, he plays the blues. That’s all that was needed for me to book my place at his little soirée on a cold wet Wednesday night in Salford.

As I took my seat his band entered from stage right – a five piece, with 3 guitarists in total - this was going to be one hell of a guitar driven night! A few seconds later on walked Steven Seagal, much to the delight of the audience.

The band launched straight into ‘Love Doctor’ from their new album ‘Mojo Priest’. Not having heard their music before I was immediately impressed. Some great funky blues with a fast rhythm and great bass. I started to think Seagal could actually play the guitar!

The second song ‘Alligator Ass’ was just as impressive and as equally, if not slightly more funky! This time Seagal ripping it up on guitar, with some fast blues chops. Not only can the man play the guitar, he can sing as well! Deep dark blues voice, perfect for the music he’s playing.

Throughout the night Steven was very chatty to the audience, and proved that even approaching 50 years old, he still has the younger women swooning over him, as was evident when he invited women from the audience down to the front – the stampede was akin to a herd of wild animals racing towards supper!

The rest of the set was equally as good, with some slow blues fuelled numbers, mixed with funky rockier tunes.

At the end of the night Steven left the stage, leaving the crown chanting for an encore – and they got it. He came back on with the band and belted out a magnificent version of The Troggs ‘Wild Things’.

I urge everyone with the slightest interest in blues to either see this man live, or get hold of a copy of Mojo Priest – forget your opinions of Steven Seagal the movie star and buy this for Steven Seagal the musician!
