Drop 2 Chord Voicings
One of the most important skills that a guitarist needs to have is the ability to build and understand chord voicings. The old days of buying chord books and trying to memorize 1000’s of chords is not only a daunting task but also is needless and generally a waste of time. It is so much easier to learn how chords are voiced and to be able to build chords as you need to by some relatively basic steps that can be easily learned . This lesson teaches you the Drop 2 voicing.
Another lesson on this site deals with the Drop 3 voicing. These are the two most important chord voicing patterns that should be learned by the advancing guitarist.
Here’s how the Drop 2 voicing is formed by lowering the Second degree of a closed position four part chord voicing through the seventh degree. 1357 voicing
- B1 B1
- G2
- E3 E3
- C4C4
- G2
The four inversions of the drop 2 voicings are:
- 1 5 7 3
- 3 7 1 5
- 5 1 3 7
- 7 3 5 1
Here are the voicings in all inversions as we travel up the neck of the fingerboard with the the bass note on the sixth, fifth and 4th string:
- 1 - root of chord
- 3 - third of chord
- 5 - fifth of chord
- 7 - seventh of chord of chord
- b3- flatted third of chord
- b5 -flatted fifth of chord
- b7- flatted seventh of chord
