Green Day - Bullet in a Bible
Green Day - Bullet in a Bible is a 2 disc set with a live DVD video and an audio CD. The DVD features the "American Idiot" tour in it’s UK stage. Recorded over the 2 day event at the Milton Keynes National Bowl in June 2005 we are treated to a mix of new tracks and some old classics.
Since the release of Warning and Shenanigans, the band has become more popular that ever, and unfortunately very commercial indeed. American Idiot sees the band influenced by politics (Billy Joe Armstrong: My name is George W Bush. Actually, my name is asshole) - a common occurrence since 9/11.
Whilst the American Idiot tracks from this CD/DVD do have appeal, it’s the classics such as Brain Stew, Longview (a personal favourite) and Basket Case that give the most kicks.
The DVD concert cuts to some backstage chat with the band occasionally and this provides a little variation. The 65,000 strong crowd are highly charged and respond fanatically to the chants of Armstrong. Since this was the "American Idiot" tour it can be expected that there will be many songs from the same album, but you can’t help but want more of the classic tracks. Jaded never followed Brain Stew which is a blasphemy in itself! Knowledge, the operation ivy cover, never made the DVD which is as shame - it’s one of those classic tracks that enters into all of their live shows. The DVD misses out a few more tracks from the concert itself such as Maria, Homecoming and She. Whilst this could be a shame for those that buy the DVD after seeing them play live, the rest of us will be ignorant to it. Having said that, we can’t come to expect the producers to fit 2 days worth of concert onto one DVD.
Look out for the King For a Day medley that features "you make me wanna shout" and "always look on the bright side of life" that fit nicely with the king for a day backing!
Not much to say about the audio CD as it’s just the audio from the concert. Overall, I think this is a pretty good addition to any Green Day collection.
My only nag would be the latest fan-base - they would be more suited to McFly and Busted rather than a punk rock band formed back in 1989!
